Patil SS, Patil SR, Naik SS, Durgawale PM, Devkar VV. An Assessment of Nutritional Status Among School Going Adolescents (10-15 Years - A Study from Rural Maharashtra. |
Abstract: A cross-sectional, school based study was carried out in a rural area to assess the nutritional status among the adolescents in the age group of 10-15 years. Out of 321 study subjects, 178 (55.5%) were boys and 143(44.5%) were girls. The height correlated positively with age and increased with the increase in age in boys and girls. In present study the prevalence of stunting in 10-15years age group was 16.9% among boys and 6.3% in girls with an overall prevalence of 11.6%. In the present study the prevalence of thinness was 41.6% in boys and 28.1% in girls, with overall prevalence of 34.8%. There was statistically highly significant association between socioeconomic status and prevalence of stunting and thinness. Regular health check-up with concerted effort towards nutrition along with focused health education can improve the health and nutritional status of these school going rural adolescents. Key words: Adolescents, Stunting, Thinness. |

Chaturvedi R, Sharma RP, Martolia DS, Nigam S, Varma P, Midha T. Evaluation of Primary Immunization Coverage in an Industrial City of Uttar Pradesh. |
Abstract: Background: Background: There is gradual albeit a slow progress in the performance of routine immunization in India over last few years. Six states with high population contribute to 80% of 8.1 million unimmunized children in the country out of which 52% of the total unimmunized reside in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alone. Objectives :1. To study the primary immunization coverage of children aged 12-23 months in the slums of Kanpur Nagar 2.To calculate drop out rate for various vaccines. Methodology: 30 cluster sampling technique. Results: 52.38% study subjects were fully immunized, 29.52% were partially immunized and 18.10% were not immunized at all. Coverage was highest for BCG vaccine (81.90%) and lowest for Hepatitis B3(41.90%). Drop out rate for DPT / OPV (I-III), DPTI – Measles and BCG – Measles was 25.88%, 34.70% and 35.46% respectively. Conclusion: Sustained efforts are required to achieve the target of universal coverage of immunization in children. Key words: Immunization, Cluster sampling, Drop out |

Salati SA, Kadi AA. Profile of Co-morbidities in the Obese. |
Abstract: Objective: To study the profile of co-morbidities in obese patients reporting for bariatric surgical procedures. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at the Bariatric Surgery Unit of Department of Surgery of the College of Medicine, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. The records of all the obese patients (with Body Mass Index greater than 30), evaluated in the department over the period of two years from Jan 2012 to Dec 2014, were studied and co-morbidities were sought in all subjects. Results: Of the 172 subjects, 76.2% (n=131) were female and 23.8% (n=41) male. The age ranged from 17–49 years (Mean 29.9 years; Mode 28 years). The weight ranged from 82 kg–146kg and BMI ranged from 33–54 (mean BMI 44.7 kg/m). Out of the total of 172 patients, 96 (56 %) including 72 females and 24 males had one or more co-morbidities. Conclusion: A wide range of co-morbidities occur in obese patients that have the potential to decrease the quality of life and the life span. Shenoy SP, Sharma P, Marla PK, Batchu CK. A Novel Technique to Prevent Effluent Spillage During Percutaneous Cystolithotripsy. |
Abstract: Our objective was to design an efficient system for collection of refluxing irrigant during performance of percutaneous cystolithotripsy (PCL) to avoid the messy spillage and its undesirable consequences on the patient, the operating team and the operating room environment. A closed drainage system using a long sleeve surgical glove, 10 millimeter laparoscopic trocar, 30 french Amplatz sheath, Y-tubing and linen thread was designed for performing PCL without disconnection during the procedure. While the refluxing effluent was efficiently drained, minimizing spillage, the calculus fragments were collected in a distensible receptacle adjacent to the Amplatz sheath. Three procedures were performed over a year on males with large bladder calculi. The system designed by us was easy to set up, lent itself to easy unhindered performance of the procedure, and spillage of effluent was minimized.

Sarawgi M, Sahu P, Baruah B, Kumar A, Dubey KP, Gupta A. An Unusual Cause of Hoarseness - Hamartoma Larynx. |
Abstract: A hamartoma is a benign, focal malformation that resembles a neoplasm in the tissue of its origin. It is a rare finding in the head and neck area and usually occurs as an age-related tumour in the lung. Herein, we report a case of 52 years old male presented with hoarseness and non productive cough since 2 months. On flexible direct laryngoscopy a smooth, sessile, hyperaemic mass arising from the right vocal cord was seen. Under video-endoscopy, excision of the mass was done using radiofrequency probe and the mass revealed hamartoma on histopathology. Laryngeal hamartoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of benign laryngeal lesions. Complete surgical removal is the method of choice but should be limited in order to preserve laryngeal function, as the prognosis is excellent.

Agarwal V, Bist SS, Goyal M, Bharti B, Monga U. Huge Epiglottic Cyst Presenting as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. |
Abstract: Epiglottic cysts are benign lesions which are either incidental findings or they presents as mild dysphagia and hoarseness or some degree of respiratory obstruction. We report a rare case of adult male with huge epiglottic cyst presenting as obstructive sleep apnoea. A 50 years aged male presented with chief complain of loud snoring for one year. He also had mild dysphagia and feeling of lump in the throat. After detailed examination and polysomnography this patient was diagnosed as obstructive sleep apnoea due to huge epiglottic cyst. This patient underwent successful cyst excision under general anaesthesia. Six weeks post operative repeat polysomnography of patient showed marked improvement. We discuss the epiglottic cyst as a cause of snoring and emphasize the importance of routine check-up of larynx in diagnosing and anaesthetic and surgical skills in managing this rare condition.
